Akihabara

Dive into the vibrant history of Akihabara; the heart of Japan’s electronic and pop culture whose rich history dates to the Meiji period. Once known as Chinkabara (“extinguished fire field”), this dynamic city served as passage for craftsmen and tradesmen journeying between Tokyo and northwestern Japan. Fires were common at the time, so it was often said “Fires and quarrels are the flowers of Edo”.

To protect the city against frequent fires, the shrine of Akiba Diagongen (the Japanese Buddhist deity that protects from fire) was transferred from Enshu (modern day Shizuoka) to Chinkabara. The city underwent a series of names like Chinkabara, Akibagahara, Akiba. The introduction of a railroad station in 1890 led to the official naming of the city as Akihabara, although locals affectionately still refer to it as Akiba today.

Your Kartzilla Go Kart tour of Tokyo takes you on the adventure cruising through in this iconic city in your favorite costume and experiencing the transformation of this historic city that was once synonymous of fires, temples, and deity now synonymous with maid cafes, electronics, and captivating high-rise buildings.
